I finally had to sell my poor old Taurus to the parts yard today. 256,000 miles on her. Ten years of being basically despised by her previous owner (who I used to live with...she wanted a BMW but her dad wouldn’t buy it for her), and then another three years after that of me being barely able to keep her running. This old car went to Arkansas and back multiple times, Dallas and back multiple times, ran without oil, ran without brake pads, ferried around rock stars and was given questionable looks by security guards in all sorts of places, all in the brutal heat and dust of South Texas.

After I bought her for my own, she was my freedom. She was even my home for a rough patch about two years ago. One of the coldest (laugh, Northerners, laugh, I know...) winters here and suddenly I had no place to live, so I drove her to work every night and then parked in a far corner of the parking lot during the day and rolled up in a blanket in the back seat trying to stay warm. She got me through that, and into my first apartment, and kept on going.

Time finally caught up with her. Little things started going wrong, and I would fix them and they would go wrong again, usually bringing along new friends every time. Eventually one morning on my way home from work, every warning light possible lit up. I lost the brakes, the power steering, the headlights, even the gas gauge...and she still managed to get me home one last time before everything shut off. Right up to the end, the old Spaceship never once left me stranded.

So yeah, I’m upset over a car that most people wouldn’t give a second thought to. Just a Taurus. Just an amazing, reliable, sometimes cantankerous old thing that I’m going to miss. Thanks, old Spaceship. Rest now, you earned it.

A nicely written homage to what sounds like a sincere and serviceable old car. Well done.
